The Kathmandu city is a capital city of Nepal, known as a city of temples. It is also a central place of the business hub facilitated by all the modern inventions and technologies. Beside this, there are historical and mediaeval palaces, Hindu and Buddhists’ monuments. It is surrounded by Lalitpur and Bhaktapur city, which are also popular for rich arts and architectures. The major sightseeing places in Kathmandu city are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath Stupa. They are enlisted in the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square is a main tourist spot, situated closer to the tourist hub- Thamel. It is also popular as the Basantapur Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square. It is a historical royal palace surrounded by ancient monuments and temples dedicated to Hindu god and goddesses, from the 16th century. The Taleju temple, statue of Kal Bhairav, lord of destruction, large holy bells, monuments of lord Shiva and Parvati are some of the attractions of Kathmandu Durbar Square. The house of Kumari, the only living goddess in the world lies in this Durbar Square. The Kasthamandap temple is believed to have built by a single timber, which is the source of the name of Kathmandu.
Swayambhunath Stupa
Swayambhunath Stupa is located on the hilltop in central Kathmandu, about 3 km from Thamel. It is 2500 years old Stupa, painted by the eyes of Buddha on the four sides of it. It signifies the gaze to all the good and bad deeds. This is a significant Stupa for the Buddhist devotees, surrounded by other temples as Haratima. There are 365 steps to reach the Stupa which signifies the steps to go to the heaven.
Pashupatinath Temple
Pashupatinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the main god in Hindu religion. It is located on the bank of Bagmati River, with golden roof and four silver doors. It is one of the greatest Hindu pilgrimage places in the world. A big fair held at the Mahashivaratri celebration. Another attraction of the place is cremation. Dead bodies are burnt in Hinduism.
Bouddhanath Stupa
Boudhanath Stupa is located 6 km east of central Kathmandu, built in the 5th century. It is in the form of Mandalas and regarded as the greatest Buddhist Stupa in Asia. It is surrounded by the Tibetan Buddhist settlement. Many Buddhist devotees pay their homage every year in this Stupa. Visitors can see many people meditating and doing some rituals of the Buddhist monks. It is also a major sightseeing spot in the Kathmandu city.
